Are There Poisonous Snakes in Hawaii?

Wild Snake

No, Hawaii should technically not have any poisonous snakes although it can’t be 100% guaranteed as people may have illegally imported and released pet snakes in the past. The reason it’s very unlikely that you will encounter venomous snakes in Hawaii is due to the fact that snakes on the island are illegal, especially because they can pose a serious threat to the native island wildlife.

Legally speaking, the only snakes that should exist in Hawaii are the four brown tree snakes brought in by the Hawaii Agricultural Department. These snakes were brought in to train dogs to detect dangerously invasive snake species. If you do somehow come across a snake while you are spending time in Hawaii then please don’t try to get rid of the snake on your own. Contact 911 for the wild snakes to be handled appropriately.
