Prevent Gnats from Flying Through the Air Conditioner
Air Conditioners have proved to be a tempting gateway for several gnats looking for a new home. Water droplets from the hose of an AC compressor invite gnats to find solace in ducts. It will only be a matter of time until they discover that there is food beyond the ducts and before you know it, you’re struggling to kill gnats with your bare hands but all in vain.
Your first instinct might be to spray an insect repellent bur please refrain from doing so. You wouldn’t want to be inhaling toxic fumes every time you turn on your AC. Here are some possible preventive measures:
- Keep an eye out for hairline crevices around the unit and seal every visible crack with duct tape. Remember that duct tape is only a temporary solution as it isn’t a very good friend of insulation.
- Fill up the cracks with rope caulk. It’s similar to Play-Doh and can be molded into whichever shape that corresponds to the hole through which the gnats snuck in.
- Install a fine wire mesh or window screening to block any passage from the duct openings. You might need to get professional help to ensure that it’s done correctly and all points of entry are shut.
- Cardboard and paper towels can be used similarly to fill up holes but they aren’t as reliable as screening.
