4 Natural Ways to Get Rid of Musty Mildew Smell in the Basement

Just moved into a new house with a musty basement? Try these four home remedies to quickly get rid of the musty mildew smell, especially during humid weather.

1. Run a Dehumidifier
The musty smell is most likely coming from the development of mildew and mold, which thrive in dark, damp locations like the basement. The first step to removing the musty basement smell is to run a dehumidifier on a daily basis.

You will want to use a large dehumidifier as, chances are, it will pull a large amount of water from the air on a daily basis.

2. Run an Ozone Generator
Run an ozone generator in the basement once you are satisfied with the indoor humidity level. These generators produce a colorless gas called ozone which reacts with then eradicates the musty mildew smell.

You should not be in the basement while the ozone generator is running. Set the timer of the ozone machine so that you can return to the basement an hour or two after the machine automatically turns off.

3. Sprinkle Baking Soda on the Floor
Spread a generous amount of baking soda on the basement floor or carpet. Let the baking soda sit overnight before you clear it away with a vacuum cleaner.

As an amphoteric substance, baking soda can help deodorize the air by reacting with odor-causing compounds (both acid and base).

4. Identify & Remove the Source of Moisture
The musty mildew smell in the basement will keep coming back until you have identified where the moisture is coming from.

Do a thorough examination of your house and fix all leaking pipes. Make sure all the external downspouts are facing away from the foundation of your house. Whatever you end up doing, don’t just try and mask the musty basement smell.
