How to Get Rid of Hoverflies on Your Patio

Hoverflies

Hoverflies, also known as flower flies, love feeding on pollen and nectar. While they do not have stingers, they can still be a nuisance. If your patio has potted plants, you are going to be seeing a lot of these insects. There are however ways to get rid of them and enjoy tranquility of your patio.

If you have a fan on the patio, turn it on and leave it on. Hover flies do not like the effect of a working fan in their living environment, so they will leave. If they come back, turn your fan on again.

Natural/organic repellents will also work, and the good news is that you can make them yourself. Lemon and cloves, citronella smoke and citrus fruit feels are some of the solutions that will repel hover flies.

Fly traps should be used, but only as a last resort because they kill flower flies. The ideal solutions should be the ones that don’t kill these insects because they are harmless and have a role to pay in the food chain; they are pollinators, and their larvae consume aphids, which harm plants if unchecked.
