4 Natural Ways to Get Rid of Dog Smell in the House
Are you a dog owner or someone who moved into a home where the previous residents owned dogs? Here are four simple tricks to get rid of the dog odor in the house.
1. Turn on a HEPA Air Purifier
A HEPA air purifier, such as the LEVOIT Air Purifier, will make a huge difference to the quality of your life. These units will get rid of the dog smell by removing the dog dander that floats around in the air. A HEPA air purifier is a must-have for people who own long-haired dogs. While it may not eliminate the smell entirely, HEPA air purifiers are also great for reducing the wet, musty dog smell that come from dog urine stains.
2. Neutralize the Dog Smell with Vinegar
Place a bowl of white distilled vinegar in the corner of the room and let it sit overnight. Vinegar doesn’t mask bad odor. It contains a compound called acetic acid that fights off the bacteria and fungi that produces smelly household odor. You could also speed up the effect by simmering the vinegar in a pan for about fifteen minutes. Once you are done, open all the windows to air out the vinegar smell.
3. Sprinkle Baking Soda on the Carpet
Baking soda is a naturally-occurring mineral with air-deodorizing properties. Sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda on the carpet then use a broom to work the powder into the base of the carpet. Let the powder sit for a few hours before you clear it away with a vacuum cleaner. While it is a naturally-occurring mineral, your dogs should be kept away when the baking soda is applied because it can be dangerous to them if they ingest a huge amount of the powder.
4. Don’t Feed Your Dog Junk
Most pet owners don’t realize this but a dog’s diet plays a huge role in the development of smelly odor. Dogs that are fed low-quality snacks are likely to smell more than dogs that are fed a healthy, high-quality diet.
You may need to experiment with different dog foods to figure out which doesn’t cause your dog’s coat to smell bad. In addition to the above steps, make sure you vacuum your home everyday and wash your dog (and the dog bedding) on a regular basis to prevent the dog smell from becoming a permanent problem at home.
