5 Natural Ways to Get Rid of Cigarette Smoke Smell in Your Room

Did you just move into a house that reeks of cigarette odor? Use these five home remedies to get rid of the cigarette smoke smell in your room.

1. Absorb the Smell with Odor Removal Bags
Place odor removal bags in your room. These bags contain a non-toxic mineral called sodium aluminosilicate that absorbs the cigarette smell.

While the mineral is natural and non-toxic, it’s still important to keep the the bags out of reach from children and pets. Each bag will last about 3-4 months after it’s taken out from the packaging.

2. Turn on the Ozone Generator
An ozone generator can work miracles at removing all sorts of household odor. The generator releases a colorless gas called ozone which eliminates the smoke smell (and other household odor) through the process of oxidization.

Make sure you aren’t in the room when the ozone generator is running. Have the timer set so the generator turns off an hour or so before you return to the room. This should give enough time for any remaining ozone to dissipate.

3. Wipe Hard Surfaces with White Vinegar
Mix a cup of white distilled vinegar with a half a cup of baking soda and 2 cups of warm water. Dip a sponge or old rag into the mixture then start wiping the hard surfaces in your room with it.

You could also place a bowl of white vinegar in the room and let it sit overnight (you’ll probably want to sleep somewhere if it’s the bedroom we are speaking of). The smell of the vinegar will eventually go away.

4. Sprinkle Baking Soda in the Room
Sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda around the room. Vacuum out the baking soda once a night has passed. Baking soda is an amphoteric compound, which means it’ll react with substances that are strongly acidic.

5. Place Air-Purifying Houseplants
You could also place a few houseplants in the room that have natural air-purifying abilities. Plants like bamboo palms and peace lilies, for example, can help filter out harmful chemicals found in cigarette smokes.
