How to Get Rid of Bats in the House Using Natural Home Remedies

Bats

Having bats around isn’t necessarily a bad thing as some species love to feed on nuisance pests like mosquitoes and flies. The bats themselves, however, may start to become a nuisance to you if they start to roost in the attic or other parts of your house. Here are our top suggestions for getting rid of bats using natural home remedies. Before you try anything on your own, please note that it is illegal to trap or kill certain species of bats.

1. Set up a Bat Box in the Yard

our first suggestion is to set up an alternative roosting spot for the bats. You can build or buy a bat roosting box and have it set up in an area of the yard where the bats won’t pose a nuisance. To encourage the bats to use their “new home”, you will need to make sure the house is of a certain size and fixed at a certain height.

2. Set up Exit-Only Flaps

If you already have some bats that like to roost in the attic space then we suggest setting up an exit-only flap at the opening where the bats enter and exit from. This may differ slightly by location but it’s best to set up the excluder during the month of September in order to maximize the chances of success with using a bat excluder.

3. Set up Screens and Close Out Gaps

For other smaller gaps around the house, we suggest setting up screens and sealing off cracks or unwanted gaps along the wall with material like caulk to ensure there’s no way in for the bats. For your safety, it would also be a good idea to get rabies vaccination for everyone in the household before you take any bat prevention steps. According to the CDC, bats are responsible for roughly 7 in 10 rabies deaths.
