Do Bed Bugs Have Wings?

Bed Bug

Unlike many people believe, bed bugs can’t fly. While they have something similar to wings, they are not. What bed bugs have are called wing pads, which are underdeveloped wings unsuited for any flight. Their mobility is limited to crawling on surfaces, as they can’t even jump.

Their small, flattened oval body can help identify bed bugs. And even though they cannot fly, some similar insects are commonly mistaken for bed bugs that do have wings and can fly, like the black carpet beetle.

Though they can’t fly, that doesn’t make them any less of a problem. Bed bugs can crawl into tight spaces and even hide in clothing. They don’t have nests but generally group up in mattresses, as they have easy access to people when they’re sleeping to feed on their blood. They carry diseases and can cause itchiness with their bites, leaving several red spots over the skin. So don’t underestimate these little bugs even if they can’t fly or jump at you. It’s important to get rid of bed bugs as soon as they are identified. Call the professionals if you are dealing with a heavy infestation.
