Can You Compost Walnuts?

Most nuts, like pistachios and chestnuts, can be used as a compost material. Walnuts are unfortunately an exception and should not be used.

Juglone is the reason why walnuts should not be used as a compost material. Juglone is a chemical found in walnut trees. It can be toxic to a large variety of fruits and vegetables. Tomatoes, in particular, are known to be highly sensitive to the chemical.
