Can You Compost Onions?

Onion Compost

Yes, you can add onions to the compost heap as long as you aren’t using a vermicomposting process. Onions would be considered green compost ingredients (source of nitrogen).

Onions aren’t recommended for vermicomposting bins because the worms do not like the presence of odorous materials. If you do plan on using onions in a regular compost heap then make sure they are mixed well into the pile. The odor from decaying onions may attract unwanted pests and rodents.
