Can You Compost Leaves?

Dead Leaves Compost

Yes, you most definitely can use dead leaves in the compost heap. Leaves would be considered brown composting materials (source of carbon). You can speed up the composting process by shredding the pile of leaves with a mower.

Before you add the dead leaves to the compost pile, make sure they show no signs of plant diseases (such as powdery mildew). Leaves that come from diseased plants should not be added to the compost heap.
