Can You Compost Houseplants?

Houseplant Compost

Yes, dead houseplants or the dead leaves of houseplants can make good compost ingredients. Houseplants would be considered a green compost ingredient (source of nitrogen). Don’t put the dead leaves back into the container as the decaying plant material may attract pests like gnats. You are better off putting it in the compost bin.

If you are planning on throwing some dead houseplants into the compost pile then make sure they weren’t affected by some form of plant disease (e.g. fungal diseases like powdery mildew).
