Can You Compost Cotton Towels?

Yes, old cotton towels can be used as compost ingredients. The cotton towels, however, must be made of 100% cotton. Do not use any cotton towels that are partially made of synthetic fiber. Cotton towels would be considered brown compost ingredients (source of carbon).

Fabric can take time to degrade. You can shred them into smaller pieces to speed up the composting process. If the towels don’t past the 100% cotton test then consider recycling them. Many counties have places where you can donate used towels. According to the US EPA, the textile waste occupies around 5% of all landfill space. Let’s help reduce that.
